Ingredients

  • 200 g yellow split peas, rinsed and drained
  • 1 large onion, diced
  • 2 teaspoons grated ginger
  • 1 teaspoon ground turmeric
  • Salt, to taste
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil

Directions

  1. In a large saucepan, bring the split peas and 4 cups (1 liter) of water to a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer for 20-30 minutes, or until the split peas are soft and cooked through.
  2. In a separate pan, heat the oil over medium heat. Add the onion and ginger and cook for 5-7 minutes, or until the onion is soft and translucent.
  3. Stir in the turmeric and cook for another minute.
  4. Stir the cooked split peas and their cooking liquid into the pan with the spices and cook for another 2-3 minutes, or until the daal is heated through.
  5. Season the daal with salt to taste.
  6. Serve the daal hot, with popadoms, rice or flatbread.
