Easy Daal recipe
Ingredients
- 200 g yellow split peas, rinsed and drained
- 1 large onion, diced
- 2 teaspoons grated ginger
- 1 teaspoon ground turmeric
- Salt, to taste
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
Directions
- In a large saucepan, bring the split peas and 4 cups (1 liter) of water to a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer for 20-30 minutes, or until the split peas are soft and cooked through.
- In a separate pan, heat the oil over medium heat. Add the onion and ginger and cook for 5-7 minutes, or until the onion is soft and translucent.
- Stir in the turmeric and cook for another minute.
- Stir the cooked split peas and their cooking liquid into the pan with the spices and cook for another 2-3 minutes, or until the daal is heated through.
- Season the daal with salt to taste.
- Serve the daal hot, with popadoms, rice or flatbread.
